Overview
A hardware wallet keeps your private keys offline and under your control. This guide walks you through the standard Ledger hardware wallet setup steps, explains security best practices, and helps you troubleshoot common issues. Follow each step carefully — security is the priority.
Before you start
- 1 Unbox your genuine Ledger device — check tamper-evidence packaging.
- 2 Use a clean, malware-free computer or phone.
- 3 Have a pen and the recovery sheet (or a secure way to store the recovery phrase).
- 4 Never share your 24-word recovery phrase with anyone or enter it on a website.
Step-by-step setup
1. Power on & choose a PIN
Plug in your Ledger device and follow the on-device prompts to create a PIN code. The PIN protects access to the device.
- Use the device buttons to select a PIN length and digits.
- Choose a PIN you can remember but is not easily guessable.
- If you forget the PIN, you'll need your recovery phrase to restore your wallet on a new device.
2. Write down the recovery phrase
After confirming the PIN, the device will display a 24-word recovery phrase (sometimes 12/18 depending on model). This is the only backup of your private keys.
- Write each word in order on the provided recovery sheet — do not take photos or store digitally.
- Store the sheet in a secure, fireproof location (consider multiple secure copies).
- Never share this phrase. Ledger or support will never ask for it.
3. Install Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the official companion app for managing accounts, sending/receiving crypto, and installing apps on your device.
- Download Ledger Live from
ledger.com/startor the official Ledger website. - Install the app on macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, or Android and follow the on-screen pairing steps.
- Use the companion app to install blockchain apps (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum) to the device.
4. Add accounts & verify
Add cryptocurrency accounts in Ledger Live and verify expected addresses on the device when sending or receiving funds.
- Open Ledger Live & go to “Accounts” → “Add account”.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and pick the corresponding app installed on the device.
- Always verify receiving addresses shown by Ledger Live on the physical device screen before sharing them.
Security best practices
- Treat your Ledger device and recovery phrase like cash — lose them and you lose the funds.
- Enable device passphrase (advanced users) only after understanding the implications: a passphrase adds an extra secret but if lost it may permanently lock funds.
- Keep firmware and Ledger Live updated; only install official Ledger releases.
- Use a reputable password manager for Ledger Live account passwords (not for recovery phrases).
Troubleshooting
Common issues and how to resolve them.
Device not detected by Ledger Live
- Try a different USB cable and port; avoid USB hubs.
- Make sure your device is unlocked and in the correct app (e.g., Bitcoin app for BTC accounts).
- Restart Ledger Live and your computer/phone.
I lost my PIN or device — how do I recover?
Recover using the 24-word recovery phrase on a new Ledger device or a compatible wallet that supports BIP39 (be cautious and prefer official hardware for recovery).
Firmware update failed
Retry using a different USB cable/port. If issues persist, consult official Ledger support and do not share your recovery phrase.
